Player to watch: Zola Matumona

At 31, the attacking midfielder knows it may be his last chance for AFCON glory. The left-footed player has experienced more lows than highs since making his debut in 2002 for the national team. Silky close control, superb passing expertise and an eye for goal make this pint-sized speedster a serious threat to defenders. Watch him leave a few players clutching at thin air as they try to contain him.

Rising Star: Tresor Mputu

Without a doubt the DR Congo's most influential player. As a striker he has continually delivered for the Lubumbashi-based TP Mazembe, taking them to two consecutive CAF Champions League titles in 2009 and 2010. A little hot-headed, Mputu was banned from football for one year after an over-the-top confrontation with a referee. That punishment has seemed to quell his fiery temper and given him the drive to succeed at national level. Mputu is the African Champions League top scorer with 41 goals, and that is what fans want to see from him.

Sorely Missed: Yannick Bolasie

Yannick Bolasie opted not to represent his country of origin, choosing instead to focus on his club career with Crystal Palace. The nippy winger is highly regarded and a vital cog in the Eagles attack. The English Football League Championship's gain is the DRC and Africa's loss. At only 23, let's hope he changes his mind in two years time.
