Emmanuel Emenike, formerly of FC Cape Town in the South African second tier and currently of Spartak Moscow, scored the only goal of the match.

The performance by the Super Eagles earned them praise from Rotterdam coach Michel Vonk.

"[Nigeria] plays physical and quick and then at times they slow it down intentionally and before you know it they are all over you. I told my players to expect a challenge and we were not disappointed. Their quality is very good."

Vonk was especially impressed by Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, as well as and Kenneth Omeruo.

"The number 10 (Mikel) is very good, creative and has good vision. As for Omeruo, he is superb aerially and supports the keeper brilliantly."

Meanwhile, defending champions Zambia continued their poor run of form in friendly games leading up to the tournament when they could only mange a draw at home to an inexperienced Norway side.

Chipolopolo had plenty of chances at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, but failed to make use of their opportunities.

Since last year, Zambia have lost to Saudi Arabia, Tanzania and Angola and have drawn against Morocco and Norway.
