Certain sections of the crowd at Cape Town Stadium could be heard jeering as Gordon Igesund's charges slumped to a 1-0 defeat against Norway on Wednesday.

Mamelodi Sundowns frontman Katlego Mphela was one of the targets for abuse due to his inability to find the target despite South Africa creating a number of chances.

But with the striker having only just come back from a long term injury, not to mention that the final 23-man squad had only been confirmed a few days before they flew down to Cape Town, Bafana could have been forgiven for expecting their supporters to get behind them so close to their opener against Cape Verde on January 19 2013.

Khumalo said: "It's something that you don't want to see happen. I can't see how that would help any player at any moment of the game.

"I'd like to appeal to every supporter to help put that (jeering) to an end.

"It's just sad. We love the support, it gives us that positive energy to drive forward, and whenever a teammate is booed, that's taxing on you as well, because you never know what that could do to a player's confidence."

He added: "I believe that with every single training session and every game that we play, we can only get better.

"As it has been highlighted, there are certain areas that we need to work on and there are a few things we have to look at during Saturday's game.

"In preparation games, it's about improving and I am sure that when the competition starts, everyone will be ready.

"Everyone knows how important this competition is, especially because we are playing in our own country."

South Africa play their final warm-up match ahead of AFCON against Algeria at Orlando Stadium at 8:30 on Saturday.
