Villa-Boas had previously told the press that he would not stand in the way of Adebayor's participation at the continental showpiece.

But the Sparrow Hawks skipper, who only confirmed his commitment to the tournament two days before the deadline for squad submissions, has refuted his Spurs boss's claims.

"That is what he said to the press but not what he said to me," Adebayor said.

"There is a difference between what you say to the press and what you say in private."

The 28-year-old is believed to have not wanted to make the trip to South Africa for AFCON fearing a repeat of the attack on his team's bus in Angola at the 2010 edition.

Only after a meeting with Togo president Faure Gnassingbe is understood to have changed his mind.
