Giresse steps into the void left by the dismissal of Joseph Koto, who paid the price for failing to steer the Lions of Teranga to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations - after just four months into the job.
The 60-year-old, who guided Mali to a third place finish at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, has a wealth of managerial experience.
He managed Gabon over a period of four years from 2006 to 2010 before taking up the Eagles post.
This, after stints with Georgia and club sides Paris Saint-German, Toulouse FC and FAR Rabat.
He has signed a two-year contract with Senegal and will take charge of the side for the first time for the 2014 World Cup qualifier at home to Angola on 22 March.
