Togo FA president Gabriel Ameyi revealed the news just weeks before the continental tournament kicks off.

Ameyi said: "It is now very clear that we will be going to the Africa Cup of Nations with our captain Emmanuel Adebayor. We'll be together there in South Africa.

Speculation was rife as Adebayor refused to join the Sparrow Hawks but after a meeting with Ameyi, the Spurs player decided to pack his bags and don the captain's armband for the west African country.

"It's very important to have him in the group because he's our best player and captain. All our stars will be available for the tournament including Adebayor," he added.

Togo's gain is Spurs' loss as the London team now only have one striker to rely on in the shape of the diminutive Jermain Defoe.

Before Adebayor made the decision to join the national team, Spurs coach Andre Villas-Boas said: "He is very very important, we are speaking about a player that has meant so much to us."

Togo will play their first game against AFCON favourites Ivory Coast on January 22, while they will also face Algeria and Tunisia who make up the dreaded Group D.
