The installation of Palmer ends weeks of speculation about the possible identity of the new Santos coach following the sacking of Dutchman Mart Nooij mid-way through December 2012.

Nooij was dismissed following the 1-0 defeat to Dynamos although the writing appeared to be on the wall for the Mozambique technician when the club was forced to deny reports of an altercation between the coach and club owner Goolam Allie at the end of November.

Palmer was given his marching orders by Leopards after initially being suspended by the club following a fall-out with management late last year.

He met with the Leopards board on New Year's Eve, with both parties agreeing to go their separate ways.

A former Orlando Pirates player, the 36-year-old has a SAFA Level Three coaching certificate, and besides the various Premiership teams that he has managed, he also has a vast knowledge of the second tier of South African football, having previously been at the helm of FC AK and United FC.

This experience should stand him in good stead as he tries to revitalise Peoples' Team.

The Cape-based side were relegated from the Premier Soccer League last season and are currently ninth in the 16-team table with 14 points, 11 behind the leaders Black Aces.
