Modise: Not cut out for the modern game?

Modise: Not cut out for the modern game?

Former Kaizer Chiefs legend Isaac 'Shakes' Khungwane has questioned the absence of Teko Modise from Bafana's Africa Cup of Nations squad.

Modise, together with Andile Jali and Sifisi Myeni, were the surprise omissions from Gordon Igesund's side which will do battle in two weeks time in the continental showdown.

Khungwane says that the Sundowns play-maker would have made a positive impact should he have played.

"I feel Modise would have been an ideal player in the side. Not only does he play entertaining football but he also attacks which is what we need as a host nation," said Khungwane.

Khungwane, who was known as a flair player in his day, does however admit that with the changing nature of football, players like Modise are at best a luxury.

"Maybe if he was playing in our times he would have been in the squad. The transformation and growth of football has seen the most talented players not being selected.

"This has opened up doors to those who work extra hard and at some times produce average football," Khungwane told Goal.

The former Amakhosi attacker does, however, believe that there are a couple of players who can take on the play-maker's role.

"I think both of these players (Thulani Serero and Oupa Manyisa) represent what South African football is all about. Surely they have proved that they have the talent and what is left for them now is to continue working hard," he said.
