Phala has been in outstanding form since retuning to the North West club two seasons ago, after having failed to make an impact at Mamelodi Sundowns in his one season in Pretoria.
Prior to that, Phala enjoyed relative success during a two-year spell with Chiefs, having joined the AmaKhosi from what was then Silver Stars, back in 2007.
Phala, whose contract at Stars ends on June 30, is now set for a second spell at Chiefs, according to a source quoted by the Sowetan.
"Chiefs have made enquiries about Thuso but nothing has been discussed between the two clubs except for separate discussions with Thuso's agent Tim Sukadzi," said the source.
"Thuso is one of the highest paid players at Stars and I think it will be difficult for them to retain him, especially now that he is a Bafana player and the club's budget has been cut."
A swap deal is also rumoured to be on the cards, with Abia Nale exchanging clubs with Phala.
The 26-year-old is currently in camp with Bafana Bafana, who are busy preparing for a friendly game against Norway on Tuesday, to be followed by the Africa Cup of Nations later this month.
