In February 2012, a stadium riot broke out in Port Said during a match between the home team and giants Al Ahly.
Seventy-four people died in the riot, mainly Al Ahly fans who were attacked by Port Said supporters brandishing weapons.
Since the disaster which prompted worldwide condemnation, extremist fans mainly from the Al Ahly group have protested on numerous occasions, insisting that the league may only resume once the perpetrators of the attack are brought to justice.
Seventy-three people are on trial for various charges, including premeditated murder or negligence with a ruling expected to made on January 26.
"All state institutions are interested in the resumption of the Premier League competition due to its positive effects on the Egyptian economy and the sports system. The move will also reflect stability in the country," the broadcaster said, citing an official statement.
