FNB had to relinquish their rights to the stadium name once before in 2010, when the ground played host to the World Cup final, due to FIFA regulations regarding commercial sponsorship. Soccer City was the name given to the 'calabash' during Africa's first World Cup.

The bank were awarded the full naming rights to the stadium earlier this year, after the court ruled that it can no longer be referred to as Soccer City Complex or Soccer City or any name other than the 'FNB Stadium'.

But the Confederation of African Football (CAF) holds similar regulations as the world governing body, and FNB has had to cede their rights once more to accommodate the African spectacle.

The stadium will now be known as the National Stadium for matches and tournament-related events during AFCON.

The waiver will cease at the end of the showpiece event on February 10, 2013 with FNB able to take up all their previous rights during the seven days after the final match.

FNB Chief Marketing Officer Bernice Samuel said: "As a proudly South African Bank and in the spirit of the nation hosting an unforgettable AFCON tournament, FNB is delighted to have reached an amicable outcome to our recent discussions with government and the Department of Public Works."
