The Black Lions, who won the competition in 1962, have not competed in an AFCON since 1982, and the team knows they will face some tough challenges if they want to make their mark on the continent.
Bishaw believes his charges will not go to South Africa to be cannon fodder for the other nations, and that they will only have the trophy in mind come January 19.
"We won't go to South Africa to be defeated," the Walya Antelopes boss told Aljazeera. "We beat our rivals Sudan to book the ticket and this was by no means a fluke."
Ethiopia have been drawn in Group C alongside defending champions Zambia, African heavyweights Nigeria and Burkina Faso, and Bishaw insists that their opposition will have to pull out all the stops to get anything against his side.
"We really worked hard for it and people should know that," he said. "We wanted to qualify for AFCON and knew what was at stake, we went past all those hurdles and we won't make it easy for our opposition."
