The defending African champions looked second-best against the Taifa Stars on Saturday, with Simba SC midfielder Mrisho Ngasa smashing home the game's only goal just before half-time.
The Copper Bullets looked much improved in the second period, with substitute Stopilla Sunzu doing well to marshal the back-line, while 2012 Zambia Player of the Year Mukuka Mulenga cracked the woodwork after 73 minutes.
Felix Katongo would also be denied by the post in the dying moments of the game as Herve Renard's men suffered their second successive defeat, having gone down 2-1 to Saudi Arabia at the beginning of December.
Chipolopolo begin their AFCON title defence in Group C, alongside Burkina Faso, Nigeria and Ethiopia, with the tournament set to kick-off in South Africa on January 19.
