The southern African side were on Thursday honoured by winning two major awards at the CAF annual awards ceremony.

Herve Renard was named as Coach of the Year and his side received the Team of the Year accolade, mainly due to their victory over Ivory Coast in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations final.

It was a remarkable achievement as the current generation of players paid tribute to the fallen heroes of the 1993 team - most of whom died when the plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean about 500 metres offshore from Libreville, Gabon.

Chipolopolo's Nations Cup stars defender Stoppila Sunzu and midfielder Rainford Kalaba were second and third respectively in the CAF African Player of the year category which was won by Egyptian Mohammed Aboutreika.

In addition, Chris Katongo was named the BBC African Footballer of the Year earlier this week.

Bwalya now hopes that Zambia can build on their success of 2012 as they look ahead to next year's AFCON in South Africa.

"Christmas has come early for us, let's celebrate and have a wonderful New Year change and be ready for AFCON 2013.

"I hope 2013 will be the best year ever of Chipolopolo in the history of Zambian Football."

Chipolopolo have risen to 34th on the FIFA World rankings list and are fifth in Africa.
