The 29-year-old edged out compatriot Didier Drogba in making it back-to-back continental awards, having helped Cote d'Ivoire to the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations final, while also guiding City to their first English top-flight title in 44 years.

"Toure's immense contribution in helping Manchester City win their first domestic championship in 44 years saw him pick up Africa's most prestigious individual award," said the citation from the Confederation of African Football, who did not release the tally of votes.

Toure was also able to help the Citizens to the Community Shield after scoring in the 3-2 win over Chelsea in the English league's curtain raiser, while also leading the side the 2013 AFCON finals in South Africa.

Meanwhile, Al-Ahly striker Mohammed Aboutrika was named the African based Player of the Year, while defending AFCON champions Zambia and coach Herve Renard were named National Team and Coach of the Year respectively.
