Bennett Chenene and Katlego Mashego netted the goals that secured all three points, leaving the Birds in 11th place with 17 points from 16 games.
After a positive start to the season that included beating SuperSport United 2-1 to be crowned MTN 8 champions, Swallows have struggled in the league with their poor league form over the past few months leading to calls for Marques' head.
After the game, he said: "Obviously we are delighted with this result. We showed character and we proved we can play defensively.
"We worked on the strategy today and it went well. I hope we can work on it again going forward.
"This (win) is a huge relief and perfect Christmas gift for me."
He added: "It wasn't easy at the end. Platinum Stars threw everything at us.
"We knew that if we defended well we could catch them on the counter. It was a great strategy that paid off for us."
