Nandwa had been Henri Michel's number-two with the Harambee Stars, but the latter failed to show up at training this week following claims he was set to quit after failing to be paid.
The Federation of Kenyan Football have since dethroned Michel, who will be kept on as a technical advisor, while they jumped at the chance to appoint Nandwa, who helped Stars to finish second in the recently concluded Cecafa Challenge Cup.
"Nandwa has proved beyond any doubts that he is a very able coach and I am appointing him as the assistant of Henri Michel with immediate effect. His vast experience would be of great help to the main team," FKF Chairman Sam Nyamweya told Star Africa.
"As for Henri Michel, he has been retained and will be on the touchline in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria."
