Following a meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, a decision was taken by the league's 18 clubs to throw the executive board of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) out of office.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has stepped in to try and rectify the matter and will hold a crisis meeting on Friday.

Heartland captain Chinedu Efugh hopes that common sense will prevail:

"I can tell you NPL players are not happy. We love football and we want to play. We feel sad when we hear things like this," he said.

Experienced player Victor Ezeji has called for the NPL and the NFF to come to a resolution as soon as possible.

"When things like this happen, it is the league and the players that suffer. This will take us nowhere and I hope the issues are resolved as quickly as possible so we can return and play football," Ezeji told SuperSport.

The league is scheduled to kick off on December 22, but this date is looking unlikely as things stand.
