Mariga was the first ever east African to win the European Champions League when he did so with Inter under former coach Jose Mourinho.

The 25-year-old has been out for eight months with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, but made his return to competitive action during Inter Milan's 1-0 win over Palermo on Sunday evening.

Mariga is grateful to be back in action. He told Supersport: "I want to thank God for this great miracle and my recovery as it has been an eight months of pain and suffering but am now relived and so happy to be back in actions.

"It has not been easy at all as it has been months of hard work as I tried to recuperate from my injury that took so long.

"I am excited to be back in action and I want to work hard and return to my form."

Mariga started his career in Kenya with Tusker and Kenya Pipeline before moving to Sweden where he played for Enköpings SK and Helsingborgs IF.

He then nearly signed for Manchester City in 2010, but failed to obtain a work permit, resulting in a move to Serie A with Inter, from where he has been loaned out to Parma and Real Sociedad.

Mariga has played over 50 games for the national team, with a goals-per-game ratio of just over two matches to every goal.
