The Soweto-born attacker is back in full training with the Dutch giants, although he is not ready to stake a claim for their Eredivisie match against PSV Eindhoven on Saturday.
Nor is he likely to travel to the Bernabeu to face Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League next Tuesday.
But a comeback could be on the cards for the league encounter against Willem II on December 16.
Following that fixture, Serero will have the opportunity to play two more games before the Christmas break in which he will be hoping to show Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund that he's fit enough to play in January's Africa Cup of Nations.
According to The Sowetan, Igesund is keen to give Serero every chance of making the AFCON squad, the former Ajax Cape Town star having established himself as one of the country's best attacking talents.
"He is a quality player, we all know that and we are keeping a very close eye on his progress," Igesund said.
"It may be a case of we bring him to the Nations Cup and if he can give us a good 60 or 70 minutes in matches, then we will take it."
