Frimpong has previously represented the Three Lions at Under-16 and Under-17 level, but admitted two years ago he had aspirations to play for the country of his birth.
The Kumasi-born player had declared: "I have always said that, no matter what, I will always play for Ghana because I believe I am a Ghanaian.
"England has done a lot for me and my family but at the end of the day I can't see myself playing for England because I am not English - I am from Ghana."
The 20-year-old, who holds dual Ghanaian and British citizenship, is now eligible to feature for the Black Stars after world football's governing body approved the change of nationality.
Frimpong is currently on loan at Championship outfit Charlton until January after finding limited opportunities at the Gunners, and he faces a battle to get into Ghana's squad for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in the New Year as well as their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign.
