Henrico Botes put Dikwena ahead after just four minutes, while Mogakolodi Ngele doubled their lead, but had to leave the field of play injured shortly before half-time.

The result saw Stars climb to third in the standings with 22 points from their opening 12 PSL matches, while Chiefs tasted defeat for the first time this season and could end the day just one point clear at the top, depending on Orlando Pirates' result against Bidvest Wits later the same day.

Stars came out the blocks flying on went straight onto the attack from the kick-off with Ngele receiving the ball on the edge of the area but shooting straight at Itumeleng Khune.

Amakhosi then produced their first threat after five minutes, Lehlohonolo Majoro controlling Siphiwe Tshabalala's mis-hit but only managing to shoot straight at Siyabonga Mphontshane, who gathered at the second attempt.

With 16 minutes gone on the clock Botes puts Stars in front after running onto a flicked pass from inside the area before smartly rolling his shot past Khune and into the bottom corner.

Midway through the first-half and Stars went 2-0 up, Botes floating a brilliant ball across field for Edward Tshabalala, who squared his pass to the edge of the area for Ngele to fire home via a deflection.

Majoro was soon left fuming with the referee after he was booked for protesting an off-side call, although he was a full yard on-side and what would have been a clean break on goal was incorrectly denied.

Botes was then desperately unlucky to be denied a second as he got on the end of a decent delivery into the area before producing a stunning bicycle kick, but the ball crashed off the woodwork and out to safety.

Chiefs struggled to create anything in the way of goal scoring opportunities in the early stages of the second-half as a resolute Stars defence looked happy to soak up the pressure and frustrate the Glamour Boys frontmen.

Innocent Mkhabela had a good chance to make it three for the hosts as he broke through on goal before losing his marker and letting fly from the edge of the area, but he was unable to direct his effort and shot straight at the keeper.

Moments later Botes looked destined to score as a sweeping move ended with the forward receiving the ball unmarked in the area, but he couldn't get a proper connection on his shot and the ball dribbled into Khune's grateful hands.

The visitors started playing a more passing game as the half wore on and it almost worked to deadly effect as Tshabalala broke down the wing before feeding Kingston Nkhatha, but he couldn't get hold of his shot and the effort failed to trouble the keeper.

Tshabalala had a good chance to pull one back for Stuart Baxter's side with a free-kick from a dangerous position, but the Bafana Bafana striker couldn't keep his effort down and curled the ball just over.

Nkhatha probably should have found the back of the net in the closing stages after controlling with his chest inside the area before turning and firing at goal, but his shot was soft and didn't trouble the keeper, who made an easy save.
