Toure: Front-runner for top honour

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the shortlists for the 2012 African Player of the Year and the 2012 African-based Player of the Year awards.

The announcement was made at a special ceremony in Accra, the Ghanaian capital, on Friday.

A pool of players was selected by the CAF Media, Technical and Football Committees based on player performances this year.

Technical Directors and Managers of the National Associations affiliated with CAF then had the chance to vote for five nominees for African Player of the Year and three nominees for African-based Player of the Year.

A ceremony will be held on December 20 at the State House in Accra where the winners will be announced.

The shortlists for the 2012 CAF Player of the Year are:

1. Alexander Song (Cameroon and Barcelona)

2. Andre Ayew (Ghana and Olympique Marseille)

3. Demba Ba (Senegal and Newcastle United)

4. Didier Drogba (Cote d'Ivoire and Shanghai Shenhua)

5. Yaya Toure (Cote d'Ivoire and Manchester City)

The shortlists for the 2012 CAF African-based Player of the Year:

1. Mohamed Aboutreika (Egypt and Al-Ahly)

2. Rainford Kalaba (Zambia and TP Mazembe)

3. Stoppila Sunzu (Zambia and TP Mazembe)
