The Senegal international was forced to sit out the Magpies' 2-1 defeat to Swansea on Saturday as he served a five-day ban brought about by the FSF after he missed the midweek friendly international against Niger, citing a back injury.

Cisse voiced his displeasure at the situation and revealed he could consider stepping down as Lions of Teranga captain.

FSF member Mbaye Diouf Dia told the Star Africa website: '"It is a matter now closed, we wanted to mark the occasion."

The Tynesiders, meanwhile, expressed their dismay at the actions of the FSF in a statement released prior to last weekend's kick-off.

"In accordance with FIFA regulations the club was more than happy for the player to be examined in England by a doctor of the Federation's choice in order to validate the player's medical condition," the Toon statement read.

"The federation did not take this option and instead contacted FIFA to ask them to apply the regulation that effectively prevents Papiss from playing this weekend.

"It is the opinion of the club that it is wrong and wholly unjust for a national association to behave in this manner and for FIFA to endorse their stance and automatically apply the sanction without taking into account the specific facts of the case.

"The club understands that a number of other players were withdrawn from the Senegal squad. To the best of our knowledge Papiss Cisse and Newcastle United are the only parties that the national association has sought sanctions against."

The north-east outfit claim the FSF are attempting to make an example of them for having withdrawn Cisse from Senegal's Olympics squad.

But Dia denied this, saying: "The same sanctions were taken against Pape Diop Quli [of Levante, Spain)."
