Westerveld and his defenders have conceded 17 goals in 10 PSL matches this season, making the Urban Warriors the most leaky defence in the league, and the former Dutch international agrees something needs to be done.
"Nobody can be a bigger critic than I am right now, I understand their (fans) frustrations but I believe it's impossible that I am suddenly a bad goalkeeper overnight," he told Football411.
"As a defensive unit we lack communication and I find myself in a situation where I can't trust my defence because of the way we have been playing lately."
The Mother City outfit have also had plenty of off-field drama to deal with, including the in-fighting between the Comitis family, who own the Premiership side, and the recent sacking of coach Maarten Stekelenburg, while interim coach Jan Pruijn's future also remains unclear.
"These things are all happening at a bad time where the confidence in the team is really low," Westerveld added.
"As players we are not 100% sure of who is the coach, the family fighting, and results are also not coming our way, I think it is only a bad path of time that we can only overcome by a win."
The 38-year-old also voiced his opinion on the ongoing board members feud that has also resulted in liquidation threats within the club.
He said: "Hearing those assumptions was a very hectic period for one's career, because I have been here for a good one-and-a-half year and I came here with an ambition to win things.
"Last season we started at zero and this season should be continuity, but we're currently going through this and the boardroom issues aren't helping either.
"It is only a wish that all should be resolved quickly so players can focus only in football."
Ajax will travel to clash with Bidvest Wits in the Premiership on Tuesday night.
