This, after the Ghanaian footballing body allegedly failed to submit the 24-year-old centre-back's application on time.
He earned a call-up for the Black Stars after several impressive performances for the Team of Choice this season.
With national-team coach Kwesi Appiah casting his net far and wide in search of fresh talent, Awal has an outside chance of making his squad for the Africa Cup of Nations next year.
The Accra native is now just hoping it's not too late for him to impress and book a spot for the continental spectacle.
"I feel a bit disappointed but I have taken it in good faith," Awal told MTNFootball.
"I have spoken to the coach and he has assured me that if I continue playing good, I can get another opportunity."
