SAFA's executive committee members are believed to have been baying for Petersen's blood for some time now, and have allegedly managed to talk him into relinquishing the reins.
SAFA North-West Province executive committee member Buti Lerefolo has already been named as a likely successor to the role of CEO.
Petersen, though, will not be tossed out of South African football's governing body entirely as he is expected to take up a role in SAFA's proposed business unit, which he confirmed a fortnight ago will be launched on Wednesday.
