Meyiwa, who surprisingly got the nod ahead of Moeneeb Josephs, surprised all and sundry with a superb performance between the posts with De Sa telling Football411 he was delighted with the 25-year-old, who has been playing second fiddle to Josephs for the past few seasons.
"I go by what I see at training and Meyiwa has been outstanding at training in the last couple of weeks," De Sa revealed.
Speaking to this site after his heroics, Meyiwa added that he is motivated by the desire to finally become the number one at Pirates.
"I don't play often and I understand that because I'm competing with a national team goalkeeper so when I get my chance I have to make sure I don't put a foot wrong, so I can get another chance in the next game. Chances are hard to come by in a team like Pirates, because we have great players so when you get your chance the least you can do is perform at your very best," Meyiwa explained.
Meanwhile, De Sa commended his boys for a "gutsy" performance in Pretoria.
"Sundowns are a quality team and it was always going to be difficult. But it was a gutsy performance from us," the former Bidvest Wits coach added.
He concluded: "I don't think we were at our best, because we absorbed a lot of pressure and we did play on the counter, but this was about character. The guys that came in were phenomenal so I couldn't have asked for more, from the goalkeeper right up to the strikers."
