Orlando Pirates closed the gap on Absa Premiership leaders Kaizer Cheifs with a 3-1 victory over Sundowns at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday night.

First-half goals from Thulasizwe Mbuyane (12) and Takesure Chinyama (42) put the visitors firmly in the driving seat before Sifiso Myeni notched a third on 83 minutes.

Edward Manqele pulled one back for the hosts just five minutes later, but it was nothing more than a consolation as Pirates held firm to claim all three points.

Sundowns made their intentions known early on as Teko Modise fired a free kick from 25 yards over the bar after Anthony Laffor was fouled by Thabo Matlaba outside the left-hand side of the box.

They had another chance on nine minutes when Punch Masenamela put an inviting cross into the area, but Elias Pelembe failed to hit the target with a header from 12 yards out.

Despite a bright start from the home side, it was Pirates who drew first blood on 12 minutes when Mbuyane latched on to a through pass from fellow new signing Chinyama before drilling a left-footed effort into the bottom-left of goal from 12 yards.

The Brazilians piled on the pressure after going behind, with Teko Modise, Laffor, Eleazar Rodgers and Palembe all coming close to netting an equaliser.

However, it was the Buccaneers who found the back of the net in the 42nd minute when Chinyama collected pass from Chinyama before unleashing a powerful shot from over 35 yards which flew into the bottom-right corner.

The visitors could have made it 3-0 just three minutes later with Sundowns still reeling, but Chinyama headed wide from Daine Klate's inswinging corner kick.

Downs renewed their efforts after the break, but a lack of cutting edge in front goal let them down as efforts from Rodgers and Jabulani Shongwe failed to cause goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa any real trouble.

At the other end of the pitch, Klate saw his shot from 20 yards tipped round the post by goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands, while Chinyama drilled his shot from 20 yards over the bar on 57 minutes.

Later efforts from Rodgers and Alje Schut failed to do the damage as the frustration started to mount for the home side.

And Pirates rubbed further salt in the wounds of Sundowns in the 83rd minute when Sifiso Myeni latched on to a pass from Patrick Phungwayo before firing into the bottom-right corner to make it 3-0.

Sundowns eventually got the breakthrough they were looking for in the 88th minute as Edward Manqele pounced on a headed pass from team-mate Nyasha Mushekwi, slotting home from the centre of the penalty area.

But it was nothing more than a consolation goal as Pirates saw out the remain g minutes of the contest to claim a valuable three points.
