Wits' Ziwa Mo dreams were dashed at the weekend after losing on penalties to Free State Stars after the match finished goalless after extra-time.

But goals from Papy Faty and Ofentse Nato secured all three points for the Students in their midweek clash and moved them into second on the PSL standings.

The hosts made their intentions known early on as Letsie Koapeng saw his shot from six yards cleared by Ashraf Hendricks, who was in the right place, at the right time.

Swallows lodged their first shot at goal in the seventh minute, but Bennett Chenene's shot from 18 yards flew wide of the right hand upright.

Wits should have claimed the lead on ten minutes but Calvin Kadi's header from Siboniso Gumede's inviting cross was gratefully caught by goalkeeper Greg Etafia.

Later efforts from Sibusiso Vilakazi and Kadi failed to cause Etafia any real trouble, while at the other end of the pitch, Lerato Chabangu fired his 23rd-minute free kick from 25 yards over the bar.

Kadi was a constant thorn in the side of the Swallows defence an threatened again on the half-hour mark, firing over the bar with an effort from the right-hand side of penalty area.

Three minutes later, Chabangu was left cursing his luck after seeing his left-footed effort from 18 yards brilliantly saved by the legs of Wits 'keeper Steven Hoffman.

Shortly thereafter, Letsie Koapeng had two good chances to give his side the lead with two close-range efforts, but he was unable to capitalise,

However, the pressure on the visitors' goal finally took its toll in the 42nd minute when Kadi's powerful shot was parried into the path of Papy, who slotted home from the right-hand side of the penalty area.

Two minutes after the half-time break, Kadi saw his shot from 18 yards fly harmlessly over the bar, while on 55 minutes Lefa Tsutsulupa's header from 12 yards was easily saved by Hoffman.

The visitors were struggling to create clear-cut chances and they were awarded another free kick in the 64th minute, but it was blasted wide of the right-hand upright by Katlego Mashego, who had initially been fouled by Vilakazi.

The Birds kept on plugging away, with Felix Obada firing over the bar from 35 yards before Mashego fired off target again with a 20-yard effort in the 76th minute.

And the result was put beyond the reach of Swallows on 84 minutes when substitute Nato latched onto Tinashe Nengomasha's cross from the left channel, slotting home from the right-hand side of penalty area.

The Students could have added more to their tally in the closing stages of the match, but efforts from Robin Ngalande and Stanton Fredericks failed to find the mark.
