Eleazar Rodgers broke the deadlock after 53 minutes before Teko Modise secured the win with a penalty in the 84th minute.

It was a much-improved performance for Johan Neeskens' side who controlled much of the match, however, at one stage it looked as if it wasn't to be Down's day as Anthony Laffor missed a first-half penalty.

Sundowns enjoyed the first real chance of the King Zwelithini Stadium encounter after 20 minutes as Jabulani Shongwe smashed a shot goalward only to see his effort blocked inside the box.

Tsweu Mokoro then almost deflected a Laffor cross into his own net before Usuthu threatened in their first real foray forward after 30 minutes.

Dulee Johnson picked out Nyiko Tshabangu with a well-weighted square pass but the midfielder smashed his shot wide of the target.

Philani Zikalala made the easiest of saves from a Rodgers header with the first half winding down after a superb cross from Laffor before the goalkeeper denied the former Jomo Cosmos and SuperSport United man from the spot on 40 minutes.

Defender Carlington Nyadombo was adjudged to have handled inside the box as he blocked a Modise shot but Zikalala dived to his right and made the save.

Rodgers, though, finally broke the deadlock with a composed finish across the keeper - his first goal for the club - as he latched on to a Modise pass from midfield.

AmaZulu went in search of an equaliser but lacked any real creativity in attacking areas.

And it looked liked they had reached a point of no return when Nyadombo was sent off for a second yellow, with 13 minutes to play, having been booked the first time when conceding the penalty.

Rodgers and Modise both wasted opportunities to head their side into a stronger lead before Modise netted from the spot with six minutes of the match remaining after Philani Cele had upended substitute Nyasha Mushekwi in the box.
