Novara striker Haris Seferovic picked up a Xherdan Shaqiri pass before netting the winner in the 90th minute, to leave the Cypriots bottom of the standings with just four points after six matches.

In the North, Central America and Caribbean qualifiers, Mexico dropped to third place following their 0-0 draw with Panama.

Costa Rica claimed top spot after four games in their six-team group, with a 1-0 win over second-from-bottom Honduras. Roy Miller scored the only goal of the match with 25 minutes played.

The United States also moved up, into second, as they edged Jamaica 2-1 at Independence Park in Kingston.

Jozy Altidore opened the scoring after 30 minutes. And while Jermaine Beckford netted a late equaliser with 89 minutes on the clock, Michael Bradley set Brad Evans up for a 92nd-minute winner.

In the South American qualifiers, Argentina remained top of the standings despite being held to a 0-0 draw with Colombia, who trail their fierce rivals, in second place, by five points - although having played one game less.

Ecuador in third - level on 20 points with Colombia - lost 1-0 to a Peru side currently outside of the qualifying spots, in sixth, two points behind Venezuela - in the intercontinental play-off place.

Claudio Pizarro (12) netted the only goal of that match at the Estadio Nacional in Lima.

Fourth-placed Chile, meanwhile, kept up their World Cup hopes with a 2-1 victory over Paraguay.

Eduardo Vargas (41) and Arturo Vidal (54) were both on target for La Roja with only Roque Santa Cruz (88) able to find a goal for the struggling Los Guaranies, who find themselves rock bottom of the nine team group with just four games to play.
