The PSL side is not enjoying this year so far when it comes to league matches having won one, lost one and drawn one against the University of Pretoria, AmaZulu and Mamelodi Sundowns respectively.
Their 11th place standing is deceiving as they are only four points above bottom-of-the-table Chippa United.
Besides survival in the league, this is the Durban club's last chance for silverware but it will be tough going against an unknown opponent in Vardos.
"It's dangerous to go into a game without knowing much about your opponents," Mngqithi told Isolezwe.
"But I believe I know what to expect since they are a club based in the township and township clubs tend to play a similar style of football.
"We do have a player who used to play for Vardos (Trevor Matheus), but we can't rely on that because he's just a player and he's also very young.
"We have to find a way to put them under pressure but we have to be careful because the underdogs have a history of causing upsets in this competition."
While Mngqithi targets a win, Vardos owner Sinky Mnisi says they are happy to just be in the company of a PSL side.
"It is a privilege and an honour for us to have qualified for the Last 32 of the Nedbank Cup for the second year in a row. It is a great opportunity for us to gauge ourselves against teams from a higher level and see where we are in terms of our progress, because the ultimate goal is for us to reach the Premier League,' said Mnisi.
Neither side have reported injuries or have suspensions ahead of the game.
