With Kaizer Chiefs beating Black Leopards, Bucs remained second in the standings behind the league leaders with Dikwena in third.

It was a tentative start to the match at the Orlando Stadium with Bucs edging the first half and the opening exchanges in the second before a sustained onslaught as Stars chased a goal.

Klate had the first real chance of the game as he snuck into the box and got on the end of a Thandani Ntshumayelo cross, but with the goal at his mercy he somewhat scuffed his effort.

At the other end, Patrick Malokase forced Senzo Meyiwa into a relatively routine save from distance before Takesure Chinyama headed into the arms of Siyabonga Mpontshane from a Klate free-kick.

Innocent Mkhabela was next to try his luck with a shot from distance that flew well wide of the Bucs' goal.

Meyiwa was then forced to punch clear a Mogakolodi Ngele cross after the player had dispossessed Happy Jele with Ngele hitting the right-hand upright moments later after more good attacking play from Stars as Thuso Phala drifted past Jele before feeding his teammate.

With the half winding down, Robert Ng'ambi fired just over after being set up inside the box by Vuyo Mere.

Pirates started the second half strongly and after some good inter passing the ball fell to Thabo Matlaba who unleashed a stinging shot that Mpontshane did well to get both hands to.

But with Stars improving the longer the game went on, they were disappointed to concede in the 53rd minute.

Thandani Ntshumayelo drove forward and played a neat one-two with Sifiso Myeni before delivering a low cross to the back post where Klate slid in from a very tight angle.

Chinyama then fed Klate with a little chip into the box but the goalscorer fired just wide this time.

Benson Mhlongo headed over from the edge of the box from a Phala free-kick from the left-hand side ahead of a super one-handed save from Meyiwa to deny a header from Innocent Mkhabela from point-blank range from a Phala corner.

Matlaba though came close to adding to Bucs' lead with a shot from the left that hit the left-hand upright while with time running out for Stars, substitute Siphelele Mthembu did brilliantly to turn Lucky Lekgwathi inside the box and unleash a shot that hit the right upright before going out of play.

But Pirates held on for all three points to keep them two points behind Chiefs with a game in hand.
