The SuperSport United striker has reportedly been absent from training for the past few months with coach Gavin Hunt admitting recently that Khenyeza wants out.
Football411 spoke to Ajax CEO George Comitis on Monday and he confirmed that negotiations to lure back the 30-year-old have started in earnest.
"I will let everybody know when we conclude the deal and at this stage we are still negotiating.
"It could be a swap deal involving Bradley Grobler or it could just be for Khenyeza, so it depends on negotiations," he added.
Dubbed L'enfant terrible in local football circles for constantly going AWOL, Khenyeza is also an exceptional talent. He scored a brace for Ajax in December 2008 to help the Urban Warriors beat Orlando Pirates 2-1 in the final of the Telkom Knockout.
In all, he scored 23 goals in 34 appearances for the Cape side.
