The Clever Boys went on a major signing spree in the off-season, signing a handful of international players and reportedly having had a R70 million transfer budget.

At the mid-season break the Johannesburg side were sitting in ninth position, 16 points off the summit.

However, the departure of Habbas is not down to results, says Bidvest Wits FC Chief Executive Officer, Jose Ferreira: "Antonio Lopez has requested that, due to personal and private reasons, he be released from his contract, due to expire at the end of the season," he told the club's official website.

"We have acceded to his request and we are in the process of finalising the necessary paperwork in this regard.

"Antonio Lopez has been an exemplary professional and we wish him the very best in his future endeavours."

The club also confirmed that former Bafana Bafana coach Clive Barker will take charge for the time-being, with Andre Arendse his assistant.

"Clive Barker is one of the most experienced coaches in South African football and we believe that in Clive we have a coach with the pedigree to come in at this stage of the season and help the club deliver on its objectives for the season" stated Ferreira.
