The victory, which came courtesy of Bennett Chenene and Katlego Mashego, came at a crucial time for coach Zeca Marques, who had been given the final two games of 2012 to prove himself worthy of retaining the reins, with the midweek win following on from defeat to Bloemfontein Celtic on Sunday.

The victory against Dikwena took the Dube Birds four points above Chippa United, who sit one above rock-bottom AmaZulu.

Dinaledi, meanwhile, finish the year in third, four points behind leaders Kaizer Chiefs as the league goes on break for the Africa Cup of Nations in January.

Chenene had a great chance to find the back of the net in the opening minutes but could only head his close-range effort over the crossbar.

Meanwhile, Mogakolodi Ngele's shot at the other end was easily dealt with by Siyabonga Mphontshane.

Chances in the first-half were at a premium after those early moments, but shortly before the break the struggling Sowetans found a way through, Chenene opening up space to shoot from inside the area and duly finding the back of the net.

Marques' men soon took a two-goal lead as Mashego, who moments early had a shot well blocked, was allowed to get into the six-yard area before stroking the ball past the goalkeeper.

The Birds were able to hold out for the result though to give their PSL hopes, and Marques' job safety, a huge boost going into the second-half of the season.
