Marques: Tough being the Big Bird

Moroka Swallows coach Zeca Marques ultimately accepts the blame for his side's poor PSL form, but wants his players to man-up to their defensive errors.

Swallows suffered their fifth consecutive Premiership defeat on Sunday when they went down 2-1 at Bloemfontein Celtic.

The weekend's result left the Dube Birds in the bottom-three and just two points above the relegation zone with 15 matches completed this campaign.

"I'm disappointed with the result and overall performance of the team, but these ongoing mistakes by players wanting to be playmakers in defence actually cost us games," Marques said.

"Unfortunately I have just seen re-occurrence of too many mistakes in defence, despite addressing them with the players.

"We cannot continue playing good football and on the other hand leak in too many goals unnecessarily.

"It's a recipe for disaster and it demoralises the team. We should be fighting to win games rather than dealing with ill-discipline."

Having already guided the Soweto club to their debut MTN8 crown earlier this season, Marques is now under immense pressure to turnaround the team's fortunes.

This, despite him having inherited a title-contending outfit just last term under now Bafana Bafana boss Gordon Igesund.

"I knew from day one I was going to deal with the challenge to command respect from some players," claimed Marques.

"I'm not sure if it's because I served as an assistant coach for a long time. We have not changed much from the time of Gordon."
