Carnell last played for SuperSport United in the 2010/ 2011 season after having spent the majority of his successful career in the German Bundesliga.

The former Wits man has been seen as a pundit on the SuperSport football channel, where he has spoken a good game.

Now he has the chance to take to the field again, albeit only the training ground, having being sold on UJ's ambitious future plans.

The University earned promotion to the SAFA league by winning the Mayfair Local Football Association League and is currently top of the table.

Starting out in the lower leagues will mean that it will be some time before UJ are able to think about emulating the University of Pretoria by gaining promotion to the PSL, but Carnell is nevertheless excited about the challenge ahead.

"I've been so fortunate to be involved in the world's biggest sporting code. Football teaches you so many things on and off the field, so it's only natural to hand down some of the tricks of the trade.

"Even at an amateur level you should strive to be the best. Creating a competitive team with confidence, self-belief, discipline and structure are key factors," he told the Sowetan.

The 35-year-old will have UJ's resources at his disposal, in terms of facilities, in player numbers, and support for the side.

"Building up the right structure is the key to long-term success. Being prepared for bigger and better things down the line, especially the Varsity Sports tournament, creates a lot of excitement.

"This should be on every student's agenda if they are active footballers and are looking to step up to the next level. To build a competitive team in a year or two would be a great achievement," he added.
