Maritzburg United's 3-1 victory over the Dube Birds at the weekend marked a fifth successive PSL defeat for the Soweto giants, leaving last season's runners-up with just 14 points from their opening 12 matches.

Although the Portuguese-born coach led the team to 10th on the standings, he is certain the team's recent performances have been the result of misfortune, rather than poor execution.

"We have been unlucky in most of our games. We've got to regroup and dig deeper and fight more. At the back we also have to sharpen up," Marques was reported as saying to The Sowetan.

"I don't want to be in this position. Saying I am disappointed is using a nice word. Our supporters aren't happy with this kind of form."

Marques, who led the Birds to the 2012 MTN8 crown, added: "Yesterday (Monday), bottom club AmaZulu fired coach Roger Palmgren.

"Our concentration levels have to be improved and we need to talk to the players again because we know we can do better than this. We should be in the title race."

He concluded: "I don't want to think of us getting into a rut, we have been there before. Sometimes during the season you have a bad run; maybe this is our bad run and we could improve after the break."
