A Thabo Matlaba wonder strike and a cute turn-and-chip from Tlou Segolela secured the win for the Buccaneers, who sit right on the tail of Kaizer Chiefs who had earlier lost to Platinum Stars.

Wits, meanwhile, finished the day in sixth with 16 points from their opening 12 league matches.

Both sides struggled to create much in the way of goalscoring opportunities for the majority of the first-half, with a couple of promising free-kicks from Pirates failing to test Ryan Harrison.

However, with 33 minutes gone on the clock, the hosts finally broke the deadlock and in sensational style.

Matlaba received a pass on the half-way line, pushed the ball a few feet ahead of himself and unleashed and absolute pile-driver which scorched past the goalkeeper and burst the very top corner of the net.

The Clever Boys created the first chance of the second-half just minutes after the restart as they strung together some quick passes in and around the area, although Senzo Meyiwa produced a stunning save to thwart Ofentse Nato's attempted scissor kick.

Wits looked to have won themselves a a stone-wall penalty as Calvin Kadi was brought down from behind inside the area.

The referee, however, inexplicably said play-on, although he did not book the striker for diving either, leaving a huge question mark hanging over the decision.

The Clever Boys started turning the screw as the half wore on, and Sibusiso Vilakazi linked up brilliantly with Papy Faty before getting his shot away, but the ball flashed just the wrong side of the post, much to Meyiwa's relief.

However, it would be Pirates who found the back of the net again as Segolela found himself completely unmarked in the area to receive a pass, turn in his stride and chip the ball over the on-rushing keeper.

Tinashe Nengomasha had a golden chance to get something out of the game for Wits as he found himself with time and space inside the area, but his shot was woeful and he couldn't find the target as Pirates ran out comfortable winners.
