Mashego broke his leg on Sunday in the Telkom Knockout semi-final defeat to Bloemfontein Celtic, and was immediately rushed to hospital where it was confirmed he will be out for at least three months.

The 26-year-old feels he was in with a chance of making the South Africa squad, especially because coach Gordon Igesund had called him up for the recent friendlies against Poland and Kenya, before the injury on the weekend put paid to his dream.

"I feel I was on top of my game and I was fighting for a place in the AFCON squad," he told Football411. "But I have to accept that these sort of things happen in football and in my case, I will be out for three months. I'm very sad about this.

"But I have accepted that and now I have to focus on my rehab so I can heal."

The Burgersfort-born right-back also revealed he harbours no ill will towards Celtic's Lyle Lakay, whose tackle resulted in the injury but who had travelled to the hospital to apologise.

"It was not his intention to injure me, but I appreciate the fact that he took his time to visit me on Tuesday at the hospital, but he was told I had already been discharged. But he still called me to apologise and I appreciate that," Mashego added.

"At the end of the day, I'm a strong person and I will bounce back."
