Both teams struggled to grab the game by the scruff of the neck with goalscoring chances at a premium throughout, but the hosts will be disappointed not to have claimed all three points as the result sees them lose ground on the chasing pack.

The first shot on goal arrived on five minutes when Khama Billiat unleashed a curling effort from 20 yards, his shot from the left channel comfortably saved by Wits goalkeeper Ryan Harrison.

The Clever Boys eventually registered their first shot on goal in the 16th minute, but Sibusiso Vilakazi's effort from 25 yards flew over the bar.

The Urban Warriors had a glorious chance to break the deadlock in the 25th minute when Calvin Kadi found himself just 12 yards out, but his right-footed shot was saved by Ajax stopper Sander Westerveld.

Later efforts from Lebogang Manyama and Billiat failed to cause Harrison any real trouble, while at the other end, Faty Papy fired wide of the right-hand upright on the stroke of half-time.

Papy failed to find the target again on the hour mark, firing wide of the right-hand post from the left channel, while Billiat skewed his shot wide of the target from the centre of penalty area 11 minutes later.

Westerveld had to be on his toes to deny Kadi's 12-yard effort on 77 minutes before Ajax team-mate and substitute Viana Wanderson saw red in injury-time for a second bookable offence.
