Mweene: Key save in shootout

Free State Stars booked their place in the semi-finals of the Telkom Knockout courtesy of a penalty shootout win over Bidvest Wits at the Bidvest Stadium on Saturday.

After the game ended scoreless following extra-time, it was left for the penalty spot to decide the victor, with misses from Papy Faty and Terror Fanteni costing the Clever Boys.

Neither side was really able to really find their stride during the 120 minutes of action, with chances - and real quality - hard to come by.

The hosts had a chance to open the scoring within the first five minutes, with Mzikayise Mashaba delivering an enticing cross to a penalty area void of any Wits players.

Indeed, Mashaba was the architect of most good things created by Wits, but the wide man was afforded little support from his team-mates.

Having seen Wits dominate the first half, it was Stars who nearly went into the tunnel with the lead after Moeketsi Mvula headed over from close range in the dying moments of the first 45.

Stars came even closer to breaking the deadlock soon after the restart when Katlego Mashego rattled the crossbar after a lovely run down the middle, with Ryan Harrison in the Wits goal beaten.

Wits substitute Calvine Kadi thought he had got his side in front in the 73rd minute when he found the back of the net but the goal was ruled out for off-side.

The woodwork would once again deny Mashego three minutes from time and from then on in there was always a feeling that the match may go down to penalties.

It was Wits who were left to rue their failure to score, with Stars claiming a 4-3 win in the shootout.
