Jose Mourinho's men dominated the play in the first-half and might have opened the scoring four minutes before half-time.
Jose Callejon forced a fine save from the keeper seconds before Ronaldo rattled the crossbar with a close range header. Madrid continued to probe and eventually led on 61 minutes, two minutes after Karim Benzema had one ruled out for offside.
Xabi Alonso's long-range effort was deflected into the feet of Ronaldo who calmly fired into the bottom corner. The lead lasted just two minutes though as Augusto Fernandez found Iago Aspas in the middle and the Celta man confidently found the net from 10 yards out.
Diego Lopez fumbled a cross on 68 minutes and almost gifted a second to Celta, but Raul Albiol's last ditch tackle denied Aspas.
The telling blow came on 72 minutes and from the penalty spot. Kaka tumbled in the penalty area after Alonso's raking pass and the referee pointed to the spot. Ronaldo dispatched the penalty with trademark confidence.
Celta's best chance of an equaliser came soon after, but Lopez did well to save from Aspas from range before getting up quickly to deny Augusto on the rebound.
The win sends Real second for the time being, with their city rivals Atletico playing later on Sunday.
