Pulis has come under some criticism from the club's fans in recent weeks after a poor run of form that has seen the Potters fall out of contention for a European place.

But the Welshman has called for supporters to be realistic about Stoke's ambitions after five consecutive seasons of improvement since gaining promotion to the Premier League in 2008.

"You have to accept there is going to be criticism," Pulis told Sky Sports.

"It's such a tough job at this level. The fans want improvement year after year. But someone has to take a reality check now and again."

Pulis added that their position in England's top flight is a favourable one, considering the relegation of some of its seasoned campaigners in recent years.

"I watched Bolton last Tuesday. I saw Wolves play in a relegation fight in the Championship - and Blackburn. Three clubs who've been relegated and we are fortunate to be where we are," he said.

"The problem you have is that the more successful you are in terms of what we have achieved and the size of the club, people want more. But that's life. If you don't accept that, you shouldn't be a manager."
