Barcelona striker Lionel Messi has set a new record for goals scored during a calendar year, netting his 86th of the year.

The striker began Sunday's clash against Real Betis on 84 goals and got his name on the scoresheet in just the 16th minute to equal Gerd Mueller's tally of 85.
In the 25th minute a low drive propelled him ahead of the German with 86 goals, a new record for club and country during a calendar year.
The 25-year-old's tally included 74 goals for Barcelona and 12 for Argentina in 66 games.
