The Magpies have gone the last seven games in all competitions without victory, drawing three and losing the other four as they find themselves 14th in the standings with 14 points from 14 games.

The Latics, meanwhile, are in a similar position as their upcoming opponents, with last Wednesday's defeat to Manchester City leaving Roberto Martinez's men one place below the Toon Army on goal difference.

However, Wigan have at least recorded wins of late, seeing off both Tottenham and Reading in November, but losing the other three fixtures in the same month.

On the team front, Alan Pardew has plenty of absentee concerns, with James Perch's fifth yellow card of the season against City earning him a one-match suspension.

He joins injured quintet Yohan Cabaye, Shola Ameobi (both groin), Steven Taylor, Hatem Ben Arfa (both hamstring) and Gabriel Obertan (toe) in missing out on Monday's encounter.

Wigan, meanwhile, will hand late fitness tests to Gary Caldwell and David Jones , but Antolin Alcaraz, Albert Crusat, Ivan Ramis and Ben Watson all miss out through injury.
