City welcomed back Chico Flores and Wayne Routledge, while the Reds included Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing in place of Suso and Andre Wisdom.

The opening minutes saw both sides content to play their patient passing game, but just past the halfway mark home keeper Gerhard Tremmel had to make a superb block to deny Glen Johnson.

Pablo Hernandez curled an effort narrowly wide at the other end, before Raheem Sterling came close to breaking the deadlock for the visitors as he shook the crossbar with a piledriver following a corner.

A couple of minutes later Jose Enrique had the ball in the net as he met a Luis Suarez pass to the far post, but an offside flag cut short the Liverpool celebrations.

The Reds continued to be the more threatening in the second half and just before the hour mark Tremmel had to get down smartly to block a Suarez drive, before Ashley Williams' header from a corner was cleared from close to the line.

Seven minutes from time Suarez and Sterling sprang forward, but the Uruguayan's shot was straight at the waiting Tremmel.

With time running out Jose Reina had to tip away a free-kick from the impressive Hernandez and when Tremmel did well to get down and parry a stinging effort from sub Jonjo Shelvey the game was destined to end goalless.
