The Hammers ace scored the game's only goal after 37 minutes as he diverted a wayward shot into the back of the net.

The result took the London club to 18 points, two below fifth-placed West Brom, while the Magpies finished the day in 10th with just 14 points from their opening 11 games.

In a first half devoid of any real incident, West Ham scored what turned out to be the only goal of the game on 38 minutes.

A cross was cleared only as far as Joey O'Brien at the edge of the box and his shot was going wide but ex-Newcastle star Nolan prodded the ball into the net to put the Hammers ahead.

Newcastle started the second half brightly and were close to drawing level within two minutes of the restart as Demba Ba rose highest in the box to head towards goal, but Jussi Jaaskelainen scrambled the ball off the line.

The home fans claimed the ball had crossed line but replays suggested the officials had made the correct decision.

Yohan Cabaye, Ba and Shola Ameobi wasted decent opportunities for the Toon Army before returning local hero Andy Carroll almost doubled the West Ham's lead with 72 minutes on the clock.

The England international stole the ball off Mike Williamson and was one-on-one with Tim Krul, but the keeper did brilliantly to close down the striker and save his effort.

For the final 20 minutes Newcastle huffed and puffed but failed to really create any solid openings and West Ham stood firm to leave the north-east with the three points and climbed to sixth in the table.
